NYC Restaurant Week Is Back…

If there is a time to indulge in a fabulous meal it’s this week.  As Valentines Day is approaching , fellas/ladies can start the wining and dining from now.  Take advantage of the deals that NYC Restaurant Week has to offer.  From Jan 18 – Feb 5 372 restaurants are participating in the 5 boroughs.  I will personally be dining at a few choice restaurants, so stay tuned for my review.

Exercises to Combat Exercise Induced Asthma

Exercise Induced Asthma usually occurs within 20mins after the beginning of exercise.  As with any other asthma attack the bronchial tubes become inflamed with increased production of sticky secretions inside of these tubes.  Some are able to alleviate these symptoms with the use of a bronchodialotor 10-15mins prior to exercise.  As we know I’m an advocate of natural ways to get your disease under control.  

A great way to get started on improving your lungs capabilities is thru regular breathing exercises with the use of an incentive spirometer.  Commonly used post surgery to prevent lung complications such as pneumonia, the incentive spirometer helps you to practice deep breathing which helps to open your airways and prevent the fluid and mucus from building up within your lungs.  You can ask your doctor to write a prescription for you, or you can purchase one for yourself for as low as $7.50.  

Another device that has proven to be useful is the Peak Flow Meter.  This portable device measures how well your lungs are working.  It can assist you in deciding when to act in keeping your asthma under control.  Again you can get a prescription from your provider, or can purchase on for under $20.  

Another technique that has helped asthma sufferers is the Buteyko Breathing therapy in which one takes slow shallow breaths during an asthma attack.  The key here is to help yourself to not become dependent on medication.  There are many world class Olympic Athletes who suffer from asthma, but haven’t let this disease cripple them or their goal in achieving what they have; and neither should you use having asthma as an excuse not to exercise.  You have to be willing to invest the time and effort into yourself and your health to be able to prevent symptoms, thereby controlling your disease.

Shape Your Mind and Your Body

January 19th-25th 2014 is Healthy Weight Week.  This week I’m reflecting on foods that we consume and their benefit our bodies internally and externally.  The main goal is to get you to eat well and feel great about yourself.  During this week, the SLIM CHANCE AWARDS are announced.  Started 25 years ago the Slim Chance Awards bring to light the worst weight loss plans and products of the previous year.

winners-graphicWorst Weight Loss Plan:  The Special K Challenge Kellogg’s Special K Challenge claims that by replacing two meals a day with Special K products, including cereals, protein shakes and protein meal bars, a weight loss of up to 6 pounds in 14 days will occur.

 Most Overrated:  Non Invasive Body Contouring Procedures
Treatments can cost thousands of dollars per area, are recommended only for people who are at a “normal weight,” and produce incredibly varied results.
Worst Gimmick:  The Tongue Patch Diet
In this reversible procedure a plastic mesh patch is fitted to the patient’s tongue. The purpose is to make chewing extremely painful, thus limiting the dieter to only liquid. Users have reported up to 20 lbs. of weight loss in a month.
Most Outrageous:  Cotton Ball Diet
Dieters dip cotton balls in juice and ingest them so as to feel full without actually consuming real food. Risks include a blockage in the digestive system, which could result in surgery.
Other awards given during this week include:  The Healthy Body Image Award acknowledges a person who has helped others implement a healthy lifestyle, & accept their bodies:  The Healthy Weight Blogger Awards given to bloggers who support people finding their healthy weight, and give up dieting.
